What is stone masonry?

Stonemasons work with stone, marble, concrete blocks or slabs - big heavy construction materials. Stone masonry in 'the olden days' was a massive trade particularly in Europe - castles, cathedrals, and simple homes all required the work of a stone mason or a team of stone masons. That's also where the surname 'Mason' comes from.

When you hire a stone mason you can expect them to measure the job and estimate materials, then make the stone according to requirements (or source it if it is a standard size for example a granite benchtop). They will also shape and polish, design and carve any patterns or lettering.

Once the materials are manufactured, the stonemason will build the walls or lay the paving, build the fireplace, water feature, BBQ, chimney… The list goes on.

If you have stone or marble in your home already, a stone mason can often repair it.

  • We need to engage a having a stonemason to build a sandstone substantial fireplace surround (for a double-side fireplace) in our contemporary home. The difficulty I am having is in finding a designer or architect who can design this up for us. Can you please advise? We are in the Wollongong area but may have to find designers and stonemasons in Sydney.
