What's the best kind of tradesperson to install new doors or windows?

When looking at installing new doors or windows, here are a few tips to decide what kind of business is best for your job. There are definite overlaps in the types of jobs that might come up, and therefore the kind of tradesperson that's the best for your job. Including lots of information about the job when you list the job, and choosing the category you think best fits your job will ensure you get the right businesses responding!

The Handyman Option

Swapping a standard window or door for a new one is usually a job for a handyman. A handyman will also be able to correct any wood or plaster damage around the new door or window. Measure the existing door and window (including the depth!) before buying a new one from a hardware store. If your existing window or door is not a standard shape (for example your doorway is a little skew and the new door needs to be shaved on one side to fit) you should still be fine with a handyman but might want to hire a carpenter if the door or window needs to be changed significantly.

Of course, if you've purchased a metal-framed window or door, you won't be able to fit it to a skew cavity and you may need to look at a builder to advise on changing the cavity.

The Carpenter Option

A carpenter is great for installing wooden windows and doors and can usually also correct wood or plaster damage once the new window or door is installed. A qualified carpenter has a much better understanding of house structures and whether walls are structural, well-supported etc, and are a good option if you suspect that the new window or door may affect the structure of the house. Carpenters can always install wooden windows and doors and, along with a glazier that they work with, can also often manufacture windows and doors to your custom specifications.

The Specialist Window and Door company option

Service Central has many specialist door and window companies, who will view the site, check the house structure and manufacture doors and windows to your specifications. Some companies will specialise further into materials ie metal or wood, but most will do both windows and doors. They'll usually work with a qualified builder or carpenter to complete the installation.
