If your carpet is peeling off  …

Call a … carpet repair company or DIY if the damage isn’t too much.

Most carpet cleaning companies will also offer maintenance and repair work. If you have a lot of stains, it may even be worth considering repatching jobs or eventually investing in new carpet. Unfortunately, when it comes to keeping your carpets clean and gorgeous, prevention is better than cure so make sure you’re getting into good habits - especially when it comes to new pets, red wine and small children. If you have broken pool lights …

Call an … electrician.

People will often contact the pool installation company - but when it comes to any kind of electrical work, finding an electrician directly (or going off the recommendation of a pool company) is a better choice. Some electricians have a background in this kind of work and it’s definitely a job which shouldn’t be tackled with DIY. Image

If you want to install a pet door …

Call a … glazier.

If you’re looking to install a pre-purchased door into glass - a popular option being into a french or sliding glass door - a glazier will do the job. If you want the pet door to be in a wooden door, however, many handymen will be able to handle the task. Make sure you’re putting a good deal of thought into the positioning since it can be tricky and messy to change your mind later on. Image

If you want to fix or install a letterbox …

letterboz.jpg

Call a …. handyman.

Freestanding letterboxes can be purchased from hardwares and online or custom-made and installed by your local handyman. If you just want it atop a post, DIY is certainly an option. Letterboxes built into fences and retaining walls are better left to contractors in those fields. It is often more economical to make or purchase a new letterbox rather than repair an old one, but this depends on the lifespan of the particular material. Sometimes all you need is to replace a latch or a attach a new corrugated iron door. Image

If you have a hole in your wall …

Call a … plasterer or try DIY.

Plasterers will obviously get the job done more quickly and will work on larger holes or cracks which are expanding across the length of the wall. Repairing small holes is an easy job to master yourself - with the aid of a good Bunnings tutorial and some spare plasterboard. Image

If you want to put in a ramp …

ramp.JPG

Call a … handyman, carpenter or builder depending on the job in question.

You may simply be wanting to even out soil levels in the yard, in which case you’d be better off with a landscaper. Converting stairs into a ramp could fall into the domain of a concreter or a more temporary option could be achieved with wooden posts and sheets of plywood. Image

If your driveway is slippery and covered with mould or moss …

driveway.jpg

Call a … hardware to get some commercial cleaning products, which will depend on whether your driveway is gravel, crushed stone, asphalt, concrete or brick.

Otherwise a contactor will have access to higher power scrubbers and high pressure hoses which, when combined with a chemical treatment, will be enough to get your pavers looking fresh once more. You could also opt to have it professionally sealed before winter. Image

If you want to install a cooktop …

cooktop.JPG

Call an … electrician.

However, only some electricians will do cooktop and rangehood installations. If the cooktop in question is gas operated, a gas fitter or plumber is suitable. Even if you have experience with basic wiring, leave this task to a qualified professional. There are rules within Australia about the specific distances required between elements of the cooktop (for instance, minimum height of the exhaust fan)  to ensure the installation meets the manufacturer's specifications for the product. If you’re interested in mosaicing your own splashback, remember to look into appropriate sealing and protection. Image

If you have a broken fence …

fence.jpg

Call a … fencing contractor or handyman.

Depending on how the fence is damaged, it may be straightforward to just fix it yourself, especially if the material in question is more in need of a pick-me-up - there are some great weatherproof exterior paints available. Wooden fences damaged by extensive rot may need proper evaluation since one weak link in the chain can easily result in other posts being ripped from their positions. Image

If you want to install a clotheslines …

clothesline.JPG

Call a … handyman.

However, only some will have experience in the repair and installation of clotheslines. Certain clotheslines are very easy DIY projects - especially the good ole budget option of implanting two posts in the back garden and stringing them up! If you want proper supportive foundations for a large clothesline structure you’ve bought, professional installation is a wiser choice. Image
