Who do cabinetmakers think they are anyway?

Cabinetmakers are a specialised field of wood workers, and are sometimes called 'artistic carpenters'. Cabinetmaking is s kill that uses hand skills and machines to make and install furniture - usually custom made built in furniture or traditional style furniture - not like the flat-pack furniture at IKEA!

So what does a Cabinetmaker do?

A cabinetmaker can build new furniture or repair old furniture. When making new furniture they will:

  • Read plans (drawings done by the customer or a designer)
  • Chooses the wood and prepares it by cutting out pieces and shaping them
  • Trim and glue joints together then reinforce with nails and screws
  • Assemble sections and then put the completed piece together
  • Fit any drawers, shelves, locks and hinges

Cabinetmakers are commonly found in kitchen and bathrooms but of course there is also a lot of demand for custom-built wardrobes, chests, wine racks and tables/chairs. Often, cabinet makers are employed by kitchen installation companies, work for building and construction companies or renovation firms. Some will also be fully self-employed and contract to these companies while taking commissions directly from the public too.
