Why is open plan living such a massive trend?

Here at Service Central we see floods of jobs posted where homeowners want to create an open plan living space - installing bi-fold doors, removing an interior wall, new ceilings, etc. So we got to thinking - why are there so many jobs to create open plan living?

Sure, open plan living is super popular, but one thing we always forget is that jobs to open up homes isn't just about popularity - it's also because so many older style houses were built with many smaller rooms rather than open plan.

Older style homes weren't built for open plan living

Open plan living 50+ years ago was not important to builders and home owners, and most houses were built with smaller rooms and lots of them.

And why not? If we look at history we can see why open plan living wasn't really a trend.

  • Some rooms were used for functions that barely exist in our lives these days - maid's rooms, nurseries for hordes of children, etc.
  • From a practical perspective, segmented and smaller rooms held in the heat better.
  • Building materials weren't advanced enough to allow for spanning wide spaces without support.

Open plan living trends will continue

So there are lots and lots of unrenovated homes out there. When unrenovated homes pop up on the market, they sell for far more than people expect. And so we know there will be loads more jobs posted for building works related to opening up living spaces.
