A hole in cornice-to be replaced, looks like due to previous water leaking

I bought a house. I could see the trace of crack in the ceiling, which is now painted.So, I touched cornice gently with a stick and it made a hole there! I don't know what's the problem, I think it should be checked. Hopefully it's because of the previous leak, not due to termite or any continous leaking. After the checking, the cornice should be fixed or replaced.
