We have a 1960s house with an old switchboard using a mixture of ceramic fuses and modern plug-in circuit breakers. The house only has two main power circuits, one of which seems to be grossly overloaded (it covers two bedrooms, the study, the office, the kitchen and the laundry) while the other only covers the lounge/dining room. Consequently, we find it almost impossible to run more than two high-amp appliances (ie. toaster, kettle, dryer, heater) without tripping the circuit breakers.
