Repair burnt out wiring on downlights in the kitchen

The downlight in the kitchen blew so we replaced it. on replacing it, it blew again about a day later. my husband went in the ceiling to have a look and he found that 1 of the wires of the downlight was slightly burnt and the plastic casing (insulation) was brittle, then the wire broke.
would like to have the kitchen downlights checked and some of the globes replaced.
number of downlights in the kitchen: 4 on one switch and 2 on another switch over the kitchen sink.
house was rewired approx 9 or 10 years ago.
