Repair faulty fluorescent light fitting

We've recently had to replace a long fluorescent light globe in one of our rooms. One new globe we tried tends to flicker and has tripped our safety switch a couple of times so we tried another new globe and the light doesn't come on at all. We've also tried using different starters but no luck.
The electrical fitting itself is quite old - maybe there is loose or faulty wiring?
