Cover a fireplace with marble, limestone

We've got an existing fireplace that is not used and the chimney has been sealed. It is made of brick but we rendered it as the brickwork was far from ideal. So now the surface is smooth and all the corners are straight. We would like to cover it with marble or limestone and add a matching mantelpiece. There will be a need to cut a bit of carpet around the fireplace and cut about 25mm of the skirting board from each side of the fireplace to make the room for the marble.
