Brivis Buffalo 1981 gas ducted heating not working

We have a problem with our gas ducted heating. Most of the time the heat won't come on at all, although the pilot light is lit, the electrical supply is turned on and the thermostat is up. (Thermostat is manual Honeywell. Pilot is manually lit with a match.) Sometimes the heater will go on, but when the thermostat is turned off, the fan runs (cold air) and then someone needs to run outside to turn it off. Have tried resetting by turning power on and off. The heater was serviced in June this year. Vents are all open, inflow air vent has been vaccumed.
A few weeks ago the Brivis guy came out again and tested the gas and the thermostat and couldn't find anything wrong and suggested we call an electrician. Called an electrician who said all he could do was check whether we have a power supply and it seems we have and suggested I call a ducted heating specialist. Which I thought Brivis, being the manufacturer was! My mother-in-law is arriving from Singapore on Friday and she won't cope with the cold.
