Repair of ducted heating unit,it is making terrible noises

Our heater keeps backfiring, like it is not getting enough gas. it continues to make a large thumping noise while it tries to ignite. it will run well for a few hrs then it just cuts out and stops.
for the past few weeks, when the unit does not work or cuts out i have to turn the power off on then on which resets the unit. this is a pain.
also i am concerned for safety of my family.
