Wall gas heater knob doesn't switch off completely

The large vertical gas heater mounted on a house wall of my place (internally) has a knob to adjust the amount of gas being pumped out for a greater amount of heat. The problem is that it no longer switches off. The gas can be turned down to the most minimal setting but the knob no longer "clicks" to the off position so that only the pilot lighter is ignited.
