New design (low maintenance) for front yard using drought hardy plants

We currently have a massive gum tree on our naturestrip which seems to suck all the water from the front garden. we desperatley need a new design for the front yard and some drought hardy plants. both my partner and i aren't green thumbs, so we need something that will basically look after itself.
i know this doesn't help, but we don't have any idea on what we want. we are looking for some ideas that will look great, but not cost a fortune! we are open to all suggestions!!!!
